Categories: General Date: 18 / 11 / 2008 Title: Padraig Harrington set to defend his title of the Jp Mcmanus Invitational Pro-Am In 2010The 2010 JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am was officially launched today, 19th November, at a press conference attended by reigning champion, Padraig Harrington. The tournament will take place at Adare Manor Hotel & Golf Resort on the 5th & 6th July. Tiger Woods, winner of the 2000 Pro-Am has also committed to play in the fund-raising event.
The aim of the Pro-Am is to support mid-western charities and groups in their work with the underprivileged and disadvantaged. All proceeds are donated in their entirety towards the development of these services and over €55 million has been raised since its inception in 1990. Once again, the beneficiary charities will be organising pre-qualifying tournaments throughout the country in a bid to enter teams in the Pro-Am.
The golf event, which has a prize fund of €1 million is comprised of 56 teams of four players competing over two days (1 professional and 3 amateurs per team). A record number of overseas and Irish visitors are expected to attend the event in 2010 where they can expect to see some of the world's top golfers continue the success of the JP McManus Invitational Pro-Am.
Speaking at the launch, JP McManus said, "I am delighted we are once again running the golf event. The Pro-Am provides an opportunity to focus on the less fortunate in society and direct funds where they are most needed. Much of the work undertaken by these charities is done without publicity and attention and their daily needs can easily be overlooked. We are very grateful to Padraig for lending his support today and we look forward to an exciting tournament with some world class golf".
Padraig Harrington said, "This is an unbelievable event with a great sense of local community participation and achievement. Everybody who gets involved behind the scenes is here in a voluntary capacity to help make a difference to peoples' lives and I am thrilled to be taking part once again. I am looking forward to enjoying 36 holes of golf in good company, and of course, trying to defend the title!"
The 2005 event attracted an exceptional field of worldwide players including, Ben Curtis, Ernie Els, Lee Westwood, John Cook, Rich Beem, Ian Poulter, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul Casey, Justin Rose, Graham McDowell and Colin Montgomerie who came together with celebrities from the worlds of sport and entertainment to provide two days of great golf. Official figures recorded an attendance of over 49,000 spectators.
Tickets, in the form of baseball caps, will go on sale from April 2009 in a limited number of outlets in Limerick city. They will also be available online www.jpmcmanusproam.com. providing an opportunity for people to solve their hunt for corporate or personal gift ideas whilst making a contribution to local charities.
