Ben Curtis

This likeable American has the rare distinction in the modern era of winning the very first Major championship in which he played: the 2003 British Open at Sandwich. Curtis was ranked 396th in the world at the start of the week and only got into the field by virtue of his tied-13th finish at the previous week’s Western Open. He became the first player since Francis Ouimet in the 1913 US Open to win a Major at his first attempt and became the first player since Tom Watson in 1975 to win the Open on his first start. But that breakthrough win has been followed by year-on-year consistency which has seen him add two further titles on the PGA Tour, in the 2006 Booz Allen Classic and the Lumber Classic the same year . . . . was born into the sport, his family home being just 50 yards from the putting green at Mill Creek Country Club which his grandfather built and where his father was the course superintendent . . . . made a winning debut on the US Ryder Cup team at Valhalla in 2008.
