Gary Murphy

As a gifted sportsman in his teens, Gary Murphy could have pursued a number of career paths: he was an accomplished soccer player, representing Ireland at underage level, and also quite skilled with a hurley as you’d expect from a native of Kilkenny. Golf, though, became Murphy’s sport of choice – having taken up the sport at the age of 11 – and he delivered on that rich talent when he claimed the Irish Amateur Close Championship title in 1992. Murphy represented Ireland on international amateur teams up to 1995, when he made the switch to the professional ranks. He won a full tour card for the first time at Q-School in 1999 and, despite some notable performances in his time on tour, has yet to achieve a maiden victory. His best finish on the European Tour came in the 2008 Irish Open at Adare Manor Hotel  Resort, where he finished in 3rd position.
