Matteo Manassero

This precociously talented teenager – who turned professional after playing the US Masters at Augusta in April – is part of an Italian renaissance on tour. The future is immeasurably bright for Matteo, who  created history last year when he became the youngest-ever winner of the British Amateur Championship. Manassero isn’t your typical teenager, nor your typical Italian. He doesn’t possess a fiery latin temperament, and his golf game is based more on the principles espoused by Bernhard Langer. “My strength has always been my regularity, keeping the ball in play always. I’m not a long hitter, so I put the ball on the fairway and on the green. That’s my game and my strength.” His talent was apparent from a very young age. As a four-year-old, he was introduced to the legendary Seve Ballesteros when the Italian Open was played as his home course in Verona. Ballesteros asked him to hit some chips with him, and Manassero amazed him by holing out his shot . . . .a former world amateur number one, Manassero, then 16, became the youngest player to make the cut at the Masters, breaking the record held by Bobby Coles since 1967.
