Padraig Harrington

Pádraig Harrington wasn't in any rush to join the paid ranks: he competed in three Walker Cups as an amateur and completed his accountancy studies before, finally, making the move into the professional game as a 24-year-old. It has proved to be a prudent move; Harrington - whose late father Paddy played in two All-Ireland football finals with Cork and who was to be his son's mentor and inspiration - has become the top European player of his generation with three Major championships on an impressive Curriculum Vitae. Harrington captured the Claret Jug for the first time when winning the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 2007. He retained the most prized trophy in world golf with an impervious performance at Royal Birkdale in 2008, and followed up by becoming the first European player in 78 years to lift the Wanamaker Trophy when he won the US PGA Championship at Oakland Hills. He has accumulated over €20 million in career earnings on the PGA European Tour, where he is a lifetime Honorary Member for his contribution to the sport.
